Port Huron City Council will be at full capacity once more after Monday’s meeting.

Alphonso Amos notified the city today that he will accept the position that was left vacant by former councilwoman Rachel Cole on March 6.

“I believe that I was called to this area to make a great impact,” he said. “After much consideration and talking to the citizens of the community I decided to accept. My finance has been supportive in my decision.”

Amos — the next highest vote getter in the 2013 election — will complete Cole’s term, which runs through November 2016.

Amos currently serves as the program coordinator for SONS Outreach and the scoutreach executive for the Boys Scouts of America.

Port Huron Clerk Sue Child said Amos will be sworn in during Monday’s council meeting.

“We’ll bring him up to speed the best we can and get him acclimated to being a council member,” Child said. “We need to give him his iPad and all the documents they we were working on last year.”

Amos said he had originally ran for a council seat in 2013 to represent his community.

Amos could have accepted the position last Monday when Cole’s resignation was recognized by council. However, Amos said things had changed for him since he last ran.

“Since I ran in the last election I got engaged and we are planning for our wedding and our future,” he said. “It was an important factor for me in any decision I made. We didn’t want to rush our decision.”

Had Amos declined, the council would have had 45 days to accept applications and select a new council member.

Cole was sworn onto council in August following the death of Brian Moeller. She previously was elected in 2011 and served a two-year term on council.

Cole noted in her resignation letter to the city it was not an easy decision and followed the loss of her job last fall. Cole could not be reached for comment.

Moeller was mayor of Port Huron from 2007 to 2009 and served on council in the following years He died at the age of 59 after being diagnosed with cancer.
